凡是由化脓性细菌所引起的骨膜、骨质和骨髓的炎症称为骨髓炎。本病按其临床表现，分为急性和慢性骨髓炎两类。急性期常有骨质破坏，病程发展为慢性时，则出现骨质硬化。祖国医学将本病称为“附骨痈”(急性骨髓炎)“附骨疽”(慢性骨髓炎)，因其溃后常形成窦道，可有死骨脱出，故又称为“多骨疽”。
