He had been a special reporter during the Boer War and also written about naval subjects such as the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the Titanic. In this novel, also known as “With Beatty in the North Sea” chronicles his time as a Royal Naval Reserve Lieutenant with the Grand Fleet in 1915-1916, and he provides a gripping eye-witness account of the Battle of Dogger Bank. He left the Navy in 1916 before the battle of Jutland. He recorded his experiences a few years later of his life at sea in the Grand Fleet in this book which captures but the action of the battle and the personalities of the crews he served with.
