Despite recent economic gains, the labour market is becoming increasingly precarious with the rise of continual layoffs, short-term contracting, and part-time work. It was within this new reality that Greg found himself at a painful crossroad, facing significant career challenges due to what he unflinchingly calls “poor career choices.” Interestingly, his friends did not suffer from the changing work environment, but rather they seemed to thrive in spite of it! In an attempt to better understand this contradiction, Greg began a deeply personal journey where he compared his own actions to those of his successful friends. The result was a number of surprising approaches and practices which his friends used to create successful careers. Once understood and applied, these lessons changed Greg from the first person exited to becoming indispensable to an organization. Aimed both at those just starting their careers and those who have found themselves stalled mid-career, the approaches and practices he provides are meant to maximize a person’s individual career potential. The book explores key concepts and career lessons, including: • Creating an environment that supports career success • Maximizing every opportunity that is provided • Transitioning quickly to the next great position More importantly, the book encourages readers to assess not only what they bring to the table, but what potential employers have to offer them in return. ‘Why My Friends Are Rich and I am not! A Career Textbook’ illustrates to job-seekers and job-changers the path to becoming indispensable to an organization, ensuring a successful career! GIVING BACK For a short time, early in his life, Greg was in the care of Children’s Aid Society (CAS). He was eventually adopted into an amazing family, but he has never forgotten how CAS helped both him and his young birth mother through a very challenging time. As a result, Greg will donate a portion of each book sale to the Children’s Aid Foundation to support their ongoing efforts. The Children’s Aid Foundation is Canada’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth involved with the child welfare system. The great work the Foundation supports helps vulnerable kids across Canada overcome the obstacles in life that hold them back.
