Wulhaf Manor had been empty for almost five years, its buildings rotting and in need of repair and its fields flooded and neglected. no one wanted it, until the king offered it to a greedy and ruthless baron and his lazy and bored son.

He gets a cool reception from his neighbours but is determined to make the manor profitable. So he organises a hunt and a feast, inviting the king along with high ranking nobles as well as his neighbours. during the hunt one of his neighbours is attacked in the forest. After a short, unsuccessful search for the attacker they return to the manor where the feast begins. The next morning the body of the local sheriff is found hanging in his quarters. King William assigns his commissioner to investigate.

His investigations seem to be leading him nowhere, until he sees his constable talking to a Danish warlord known as The Scarecrow. He then realises that he has stumbled upon something which not only endangers his own life but the entire kingdom. but how can he get word to the king, when he knows he can trust no one?
