When Jonah prayed to God, he told God that He was “a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster,” and then Jonah told God that was why he did not want to go to and preach to save the people of Nineveh from destruction (Jonah 4:2). Jonah wanted God to totally destroy the enemies of Israel and his enemies. Jonah told God that if He would not destroy them, then he wanted to die.
The story of Jonah shows us how God’s love can discipline His children to save them. In this Commentary on Jonah, we will learn first, why and how God saved Jonah and the sailors from drowning on the Mediterranean Sea. Second, we will see how God’s warnings, with their seeds of hope, saved the Ninevites from destruction. Third, we will discover how God lovingly disciplined Jonah for his hateful and selfish attitude toward God and whatever and whoever did not please him. Fourth, we will consider how Jonah, who wanted to die, was lovingly redeemed by God. Fifth, a possible ending for Jonah.
When Love Disciplines many includes links to online resources for those who would like to lead a Bible study class in a four-week study of how God uses loving ways to discipline His children to lead them to repent and live a changed life of loving faith and obedience to Him. These online resources include printed materials for the visually impaired.
