What's In A Name is the first book in the Harken Darringer series chronicling a sensitive and brutally honest life of one of the AIDS Era underground young men trying to find himself and his way in Hollywood.
Book One takes us inside the world of a talented and beguiling young man growing up in a world where everything is not what is appears. It begins in 1958 with his mother Carlotta, an alcoholic narcissistic lesbian concert pianist in St. Louis when she marries Harken’s father, a pacifist gay minister with a male lover (Uncle John) that lives nearby. They marry to hide their sexuality. Harken enters in 1959 as a pawn in their deception. Carlotta is angry when Harken’s father doesn’t hold up the marriage pretense and she does all she can to wedge apart the father’s relationship with his beloved John.
Young Harken Darringer must navigate his way through the emotional mine field his parents have laid and struggles to understand meaning and identity while unraveling the secrets of his parents hiding in the open, concealed only by names. The more he unravels and comprehends, the more suffocating the pressure. As Harken matures and his natural talent as a performer begins to eclipse Carlotta’s, she goes to war with him. Harken tries to escape Carlotta’s vitriolic personality by using his physical attractiveness as currency. In the end the only way to survive is to use his brand of currency and buy into a world where he has power.
