For reporter Harry Sinclair small towns spell trouble. This time, in Eden Springs for a funeral, things would prove no different. The widow, a woman who hated his guts for the better part of twenty years, asks Sinclair for help in finding her husband's killer. He'd prefer to remember the bad old times and get out of town, but instead he listens to her story.

The widow tells Sinclair that she'd seen her husband with a filmmaker called Laura Wells who was asking a lot of questions about the biotech giant LaFaro Corporation. Sinclair decides to ask his own questions, but nobody wants to give him any answers. Sinclair has a nose for a good story and it smells like fear, and there's plenty of fear in Eden Springs. The one person, Laura Wells, he is certain can shed some light on the story is missing. His attempt to find her brings him up against men who are not shy about using violence to keep Sinclair from finding out what LaFaro Corporation is up to in Eden Springs.

Harry Sinclair goes to the funeral of an old friend who was killed in a car accident. Or was it an accident? Sinclair's quest for the answer brings him face to face with the dark side of the biotech industry.
