Unicorns Come at Night is a story about the loss of a beloved horse, named Chestnut. Jill, a teenager, has rode Chestnut in many competitions and her bedroom is filled with medals and memories. The passing of Chestnut is indeed a sad event, but the idea of the “Happy Hunting Grounds” is included in the story. The Native American Indians believed in an afterlife for themselves where hunting was plentiful.
In this story, the afterlife is simply named “The Place”. There is no hunting. Animals and humans live in peace. Jill goes to bed with a heavy heart. She hears Chestnut calling to her.
Outside the barn, Jill witnesses an incredible event. Before her eyes, a beautiful white unicorn descends from the starlit sky and walks gracefully into the barn. Jill follows. The reader has to ask if Jill is dreaming this event or is she fully awake. Even if it is a dream, what could be the purpose of a unicorn visiting a dying horse? This is a story with a wonderful twist before it ends. It is guaranteed to bring joy and hope to the reader.
All children’s books by of Pauline Gallagher children’s offer a related bonus feature. This particular bonus is about the relatives of the horse: wild and domesticated donkeys, mules, (Jacks and Mollys). There are facts, images and a story told by Polly who is a Molly!
