Five days after Dr. Jack Bailey briefed a skeptical President Sinclair with a dire warning, and two days after global outrage and violent demonstrations over the Golden Capricorn forced him to disclose the tumble to the world, the planet continues to spiral towards into an irreversible sixth extinction event.

Chavez and Arnie negotiate an amnesty with rival gangs, who band together to form a rag-tag militia, while Linnet is tasked to commandeer a train at Pennsylvania Station to take them down to the thirty-fifth parallel where the ultimate goal is to get into the twilight zone. Vile and wanton acts of barbarism erupt throughout New York amid the chaos of rapidly collapsing social and financial infrastructure as Cobra and his team prepares to evacuate the city.

Elsewhere in the world, a massive, ten-day winter storm that has raged across Southern Argentina finally moves out, leaving Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz, Chubut, and the south-west corner of Rio Negro provinces incommunicado, situation unknown. President Hernandez orders meteorologist Carlos Castelli to Puerto Madryn to give advice on the weather conditions the search and rescue parties are likely to encounter, but he is astounded by the incredulous scene waiting for him at Tehuelche Airport.

In the meantime, the Australian Prime Minister, Sydney Bishop is alarmed at the discovery of an extraordinary phenomenon advancing up from Antarctica at a pertinacious pace as temperatures plummet to new record lows across the continent. Realizing the tumble is not a hoax, he appeals to Chairman Yuan Tien of China to grant asylum to thirteen million Australian refugees.

Faced with an inevitable incursion by Russian and Mongolian armed forces, Chairman Tien invites President Bazhenov to Zhongnanhai and offers a quid pro quo in an effort to avert a three-way conflict where the only victorious entity would be Mother Nature.

The 35th Parallel is the third book in the Tumble series and a direct continuation from book two, The Golden Capricorn.
