J. Hibernia Smith is a Casual in a "genetically correct"(GC) world. It's been five years since Earth's provisional goverment adapted the new precepts of the Intergalactic Genetic Accords and began issueing huge fines on the "genetically correct" (GC) for procreating with Casuals. Hibernia's home is a reconditioned space pod that sits on the southern banks of Lake Erie. She has no family, no prospects for the future, and no hope that anything will ever change. Then, one evening, she finds herself in downtown Toledo and decides to stop at a bar called The Pink Slipper where she encounters Bell, a Trinity witch, who reads Hibernia's tarot and tells her, “Your future waits! It will lift you up; take you with it. Wherever you end up, I cannot predict but I do see you taking a long, trip to a far, faraway place. In fact, you will go farther than any Human has ever gone before.”
The following morning, Hibernia awakens to a braver part of herself and leaves Earth for the first time. When Hibernia meets Sante and Cle, two Janaforma beings, they teach her the true meaning of togetherness and she responds with the full creative contribution of her life.
