Excerpt:

Joel floated through an empty space, an amorphous body with no top or bottom, drifting through vast emptiness. He could gaze in every direction that he wished to, but each side was as dark as the one before, a blackness for as far as he could see. His featureless body pirouetted, falling as if through zero-gravity, tumbling like a feather in the afternoon wind.

Though he could not sense his own body, Joel's mind remained intact throughout the journey. Time passed, but he could not determine the length from beginning to end, or how long ago he had left his own body and fallen into the shadowed abyss.

There was a slit of light growing closer, and Joel's body slowly began to gain features, tucking itself into the fetal position. He sensed his arms and legs rapidly lengthening, growing out from a core that stretched and contorted, supporting a head to wrap his mind. The vertical slit of light came closer, until the warmth of the brightness encompassed his new form, and the whiteness of his destination surrounded him on all sides.

Joel flew through the air, swinging his arms wildly as he crashed to a carpeted floor. He rolled onto his stomach, cheek against the ground, coughing and wheezing as air rushed into his lungs, and a new heartbeat began inside of his chest.

"Ah! She's a pretty one!" a voice came, and then a weight on his back as two firm hands kept him stuck to the carpet. "White with pale skin. Red locks. Cute button nose. Freckles. It's a shame that your friend got away, but I won't be letting that happen to you, sweety."

Joel coughed. "Where am I?"

"Home," the voice replied. "Home, sweet home."
