Woman, said Ambrose Bierce, would be more charming if one could fall into her arms without falling into her hands. Of course, the great cynic had in mind a different type of woman than the four whose stories are encompassed in this volume. Daisy Powell, the passionate widow who engages in orgies with her niece and her niece's fiancé, is hardly the type into whose hands one is likely to fall. Marthe, in Rosita and Maria, sets out to learn every nuance of sex she possibly can, and though she marries a man in the end, it is not he who has fallen into her hands, but she into his — when she finally meets a man whose skill in bed matches hers.

Elaine Carey calls herself a Lesbian, but in fact probably isn't one. She does overcome her Lesbianism by being screwed by two men at the same time — and the ease of her 'cure' suggests that she wasn't a Lesbian at all. She may have had a Lesbian experience or two, but doing so would not make her a confirmed dyke. She is most thoroughly satisfied, and though the story ends with her denying the possibility of more from Joe, he seems certain that she will return once her passion becomes aroused again.
