It was probably too rough to be doing small boat operations in the Mid-Atlantic, but the Testosterone ran high in Destroyer Squadron 12 during the height of the cold war. The heavy seas were deemed a training opportunity, and the tiny motor whaleboat was launched into the big ocean with five souls onboard.

No one noticed when the whitewater took the young sailor. One minute he is perched on the stern of the tiny motor whaleboat, worrying about the inexperienced coxswain who can’t seem to stay out of the curl, then suddenly he is in a turbulent frenzy of freezing cold ocean in the middle of the North Atlantic.

Alone in the water, he surfaces just in time to see his boat motor away over the next wave, taking his hope of salvation with it. There in the water, all his stories come back to him and fill his awareness during the eternity it takes to rise onto the next wave for a glimpse of his boat.

Sea stories, from one end of the watery world to the other. Through raging seas and shifting cargo, to the Seaman’s club with the dark secret, the Sea Stories tell all. Irreverent, disturbing, enlightening and perhaps a little unclean, the stories are a portal to the wide world beyond the confines of dry land.

Sea Stories, as told by a retiring sea captain to his old shipmate, on a tropical beach in the filthy paradise that is Subic Bay the Philippines. Thin threads of truth are spun into thick yarns of embellishment, weaving stories of swashbuckling adventure, drunken excess, violent seas, and wanton debauchery in the most godforsaken corners of God’s blue Earth.

The book is based on the sea stories, fevered imaginings, and blatant lies and fiction of the author, Captain Clifford Babson USMM, and his 25 seafaring years in pursuit of an uncommon existence, unfettered adventure, and fine blessed whiskey.
