Both his parents having died, Ben Stanton is alone. His uncle has just finished settling Ben's father's estate, and Ben has realized $365.19, a princely sum in the 1880s. He has an offer to work for his uncle in Hampton, his small, East-coast hometown, but he's not interested in working inside. Instead, Ben decides to go to California and search for gold. As you might imagine, and as he comes to learn, Ben's fortune is not at all assured by this decision!

Included in this Illustrated, Annotated Edition of the 1880 version of "The Young Explorer" are 10 unique and relevant illustrations of mountains, much like those in which Ben searches for gold. Also included is a hand-crafted, detailed biography of the author, and an annotated bibliography of his work.

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
