The stricken plane descended on ghost pilot. It splashed down in the fen, cutting a long wake through the shallows displacing a colony of cranes which soared above the reeds with bugling calls of alarm. The starboard wing tip caught the tiller beam of a derelict windmill and the aircraft spun sharply around, mounted a raised towpath and stopped with a shudder.
