the tupelo twist is the first in a series involving benny bob brenton, a pi from pascagoula, and each revolves around a rock star who died young and/or needlessly. benny bob is 62 and non-violent. he drives a 1964 mustang(seventeenth off the line)and has an elderly live-in girlfriend named lurleen. this first in the series focuses on $20 million worth of elvis memorabilia, four killings, a kidnapping, and a nasty gun battle near the end. it contains a lot of humor, much fifties rock 'n roll, a "ghost," a black tupelo detective nicknamed nail-biter, and a great deal of the beauty and ugliness of mississippi(including its nature, lingering racism, and cuisine). the story moves along at a lesisurely but attention holding pace and there are enough surprises to delight most readers.
