In the outskirts of London, a woman despairs and instead of dreams of idyllic motherhood her visions are of a statuesque gargoyle. Her daughter, Elsie, hangs from trees and throws things around the classroom, while her brother attacks other small children and Violet slowly disintegrates in suburban nonentity. In extremes of guilt, Violet recruits, purposefully and by accident, five men who could end her life. The effects of these events are strangely beneficial, though not to her. Inbetween self-assassination attempts, Violet finds some solace in a homespun song-writer's tunes on the internet. Elsie's best friend is a nonagenarian neighbour whose dedication to her family proves more important than they would have imagined. Her great aunt, meanwhile is most likely hanging by her feet from a doorway.
