The Story of the Great War is a comprehensive and masterly account of World War 1 first published in 1920.

The book stands up a century after the Armistice, and is a memorable description of what were then recent events.

Telling the story of each major conflict throughout the continent, Donald A. Mackenzie emphasises the hardships of battle, taking the Allied perspective but always remaining objective in how he tells history.

Using primary sources from the Great War’s main generals, he vividly describes the rise of tank warfare, tells of the politics of each region and gives a satisfactory account of the four long years of battle at a fast pace.

Though his main focus is the Allied forces on the Western Front, Mackenzie also documents the conflicts in the Southern and Eastern parts: Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Palestine.

Donald A. Mackenzie (1873-1936) was a journalist who wrote books on religion, myth and anthropology. His books include Egyptian Myth and Legend, Ancient Man in Britain and The Gods of the Classics.
