From the age of 5 many Victorian children were sent to work down the coal mines of England, toiling for around 13 hours a day, 6 days a week with no holidays. This book tells the story of five such children, beginning with their first day down Skry Pit. Although they knew it would be difficult, nothing could have prepared them for the chain of events that followed, forcing them to leave their homes, their families and everything that they knew to take to the dangerous open road to London and escape from the curse of The Skry Pit.

This is the first of three books about the lives of working class Victorian children and will appeal to both children and adults who want to find out more about how these children lived.
