Rick Parker retired from the U.S. Air Force and began making his way through the civilian world. His marriage had ended in divorce and he had no permanent job, but took flying work wherever he could find it. He took up smuggling household and agricultural goods into Mexico for a while in south Texas, then traveled to the west coast and took a job with Kate Coffee as co-pilot of a large amphibious plane.
