In the summer of 2012, there were proven cases of salmonella in the following items: mangoes, ground beef, cantaloupe, poultry, and some brands of dry dog food. Currently, the mango outbreak from Mexico has sickened over 100 people, and the list continues to grow.

In 2011, a single outbreak of the salmonella virus in cantaloupes grown in Colorado created illness in over 140 people in the United States, and claimed 30 lives. Cantaloupes have been found to be at the heart of at least 13 outbreaks of salmonella in the past 20 years.

It is estimated that from 2 to 4 million cases of salmonella occur in the U.S. annually. Of those, over 900 people die each year from salmonella-related complications. That’s almost 3 people every day.

While death due to the food poisoning symptoms themselves is rare, most deaths occur because of severe dehydration. However, elderly people and small children with compromised immune systems may have more difficulty fighting it off.

The risk of infection from the salmonella bacteria is much higher if you visit other countries that do not practice good sanitation. However, this fully avoidable illness continues to run rampant in developed countries year after year. Only correct food handling procedures and common sense can lead people in the right direction, and reduce the numbers of salmonella poisoning.

In The Over Easy Guide to Salmonella, you will find out what salmonella really is, what causes it, who is at risk for it, signs and symptoms, treatments, and most importantly, how to prevent salmonella poisoning.
