Charles Montgomery Skinner was an American writer, editor, dramatic and art critic, mostly known as a collector and rewriter of North American folklore. “The Old Lodger” is a mysterious short story, entered in the collection “Myth and legend of our own land”. The narration is about a woman named Marie Louise Thebault, who lives in Detroit and has a bad repute across the citizens. She is rude of speech, untidy in appearance, loves nothing or respects nothing, and is miserly a nature, so the neighbors avoid her. Indeed, she is one of the strangest figures in the town because she is convinced of existence of spirits and ghosts and she has a pleasant narrating the tales about. But in the end of the story the meeting with real ghost waits for her. Start your familiar with American history and culture through the Skinner’ collection “Myth and legends of our own land”!
