Martial arts is the physical training for body and spiritual training for mind in order to develop the survive ability of someone.
nowadays, Martial arts is any form of organized physical combat, and it's considered 3 types : Martial arts " Sports" , Self defense " real world combat" , military combat.
unfortunately , this is 50% of what real Martial arts means.
for example , I'm a Muslim, I pray 5 times a day, i consider this as religion duty and a martial arts training, because prayer means empty your mind, escape the physical world to the spiritual one, which will enhance your wisdom and way of thinking.
another thing, Martial arts were originally created in Egypt " by Pharaohs", and China " by Shaolin Monks" , back then the normal fights were settled by weapons, so original Martial arts were a set of physical and spiritual training in order to enhance your chance of surviving some situations of fighting , war, and wild nature " A Chinese traveler must know kung fu in order to survive".
So, in other words, the word "Martial arts" means developing the human. "note that in English it means Military art, that makes sense, because military soldiers in the past were the strongest men ever, they didn't fear death, they feared living as worthless people, they had wisdom, and they always had faith in god to give them power, in other words, they were Supermen ".
I couldn't find someone to teach me real martial arts, but i learned by myself "took me long time", If you could find a master who define martial arts in this way, stick to him/her.
Games gives the most succinct answer and likely the most correct. I would add a further qualification, though.
In order to qualify as an "art".... That means a methodology that is passed on by instruction.
All human beings have had methods of fighting, either animals or each other. This may have been as primitive as whacking with sticks or throwing rocks.
At some point, methods of fighting would have been systematized. Passed on to the young of the village or tribe, practiced, trained.
That would have been the first "martial art". Likely... "The way the people of village X fight".
Over centuries, these techniques would grow and expand as cultures bumped up against other cultures either in everyday life or in warfare.
Martial refers to the the war arts. Merriam-Webster defines art as a “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation.” That definition pertains to the arts of war of a past era. I would define what we teach in karate as a traditional martial art of a different era.
I say a “past era” because modern war uses some traditional unarmed technique but little of the past technology. Traditional weapons are not functional in the modern arsenal. Blades and staff techniques have some crossover, some more so than others.
This does not discount the use of traditional techniques in modern conflict. Many techniques are definitely used in hand to hand contact.
I am not trying to downplay the techniques we teach in the traditional arts today. Some systems are more valid for modern military use than others. It is just that the traditional martial arts lack the intensity needed to train the modern warrior.
The philosophy of the martial arts is a different story. “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu is still valid today. I have and have read three different translations of the text and I am amazed at the analysis of war presented by Sun Tzu.
In my opinion, martial art are any skills that let your survival rate increase while in wars. This include dirty tactics and usage of medicine.
In Karate, sand throwing is legit technique. In Silat and Kung fu, some masters will teach you about massaging and herbs. This what martial arts are other than throwing punch, kicks and lock. They also need to teach you the mind of "Survive first, then worry."
