“First of all, there are fifty-eight slaves on this plantation who are lighter than some of the whites in this room. These so-called ‘passers’ will be hated for being too ‘white’, or ridiculed by their own by not accepting their black partition. They can mingle among us or be stoned by us as well. When slavery ends, what do we do with these passers?” This is what Benjamin Godly said in 1848, in the parlor of Conant Gardens before deciding to free the plantation slaves.
The story of Slavery and the Civil War is re-told through the memoirs of Benjamin Godly-Talfleur and his adoptive son Thaddeus. Benjamin Godly, is a very proud finance Lawyer from New York, who ventures into the gold mining business in Georgia 1828, and then unknowingly finds himself on a divine mission to help the slaves fathered by his uncle and cousins gain their freedom and become independent before the storm of the Civil War destroys the south and anyone in its path.
Benjamin Godly also finds himself rescuing other runaways while facing the fact that his own legacy may be in jeopardy of losing its purity.
A good Historical depiction of books like; 'Gone with the Wind', 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', 'Jubilee' and 'Family'. The story of Slavery and the Civil War is simplistically told through the most Charismatic Characters, Historical Facts, and Dramatic Conclusions.
