After losing his family and much of his humanity during the Civil War, Jesse Cade moved west to heal and live a simpler life. Using his skills both as a farmer and a soldier, Jesse has made his living hunting and killing dangerous predators in the new life he has carved out for himself. But a series of wolf attacks in Grand Junction, where Cade now resides, have hit too close to home - both literally and figuratively. Cade fights against the elements and growing panic in the town, to track his dangerous bounty - a wolf that seems to defy all known patterns and logic. Cade is eventually aided by a Russian wolf expert, Nikolai Rakov - a doctor and scientist who uses a combination of animal behavioral knowledge and forensic science, which is still in its infancy, to aid in the hunt. Soon, both men realize the wolf responsible for the attacks is unlike any other wolf. Driven just as much by the quest for knowledge of this enigmatic beast as they are by the spirit of the hunt, both men struggle to stop it before it kills again.
