The lives of the saints furnish the Christian with a daily spiritual entertainment, which is not less agreeable than affecting and instructive. Pride recoils at precepts, but example instructs without usurping the authoritative air of a master; for, by example, a man seems to advise and teach himself. It does its work unperceived, and therefore with less opposition from the passions, which take not the alarm. Its influence is communicated with pleasure.
