Captain Nexus and First Mate Scopes are on a secret mission. The Border Space Worlds are in danger because the Krilt have a new secret weapon. Nexus and Scopes have to find it and destroy it! But are they ready for what they'll find?

Mick Michaels thinks first grade readers need exciting books like the ones adults enjoy. So he's creating what you might call "first grade novels"—books that are more involved than easy readers but not as big as chapter books. They tell science fiction stories, fantasy stories, myths and legends, and other types of action-adventure tales that will appeal to most modern kids, especially boys. Some will be standalone stories, while others like this Captain Nexus book will be part of a series.

These action-adventure books average 2000-2500 words, each with 5 or 6 chapters of around 400 words or less. Each chapter includes a couple of illustrations to help ease the transition from picture-oriented books to text-oriented books. The sentences sound more adult than "See Spot run. Run, Spot, run!" but aren't overly complex. While each book includes two or three challenging new words, the vast majority of words are already part of a first-grader's vocabulary. And each book is checked by a children's librarian to make sure the reading levels are appropriate for young readers.

Let Captain Nexus and his crew introduce your child to the joy of reading science fiction!

"'The Krilt's Secret Weapon' is a great Early Reader for children that like science fiction but aren’t ready for Science Fiction chapter books. This book will pull you right in on this mission immediately as you look at the map and go to work figuring out how far they have to travel and what will happen next! Will Captain Nexus follow orders that he has been given or will the mission call for him to do more? Will his team be able to get the secret weapon from the Krilts before they destroy the Border Space Worlds? This book will have your child begging for more. They will enjoy this amazing ride with Captain Nexus, Scopes, Dr. Lish and Freggy! This book will be great for children reading on a level 2-3." -- Carolyn Lowery, Librarian Assistant, Public Library-Central Branch, Forsyth County NC
