After twisting the court around his finger, tracking down a fugitive and a slaver to administrate his office, Tamerlan has finally begun the investigation into Chiledu’s assassination – and now his keen, calculating mind can be put to work. At last he’s reunited with his beloved sister in Alice Springs, here now to interrogate three concubines, and he begins piecing together the crime....

Meanwhile, his undercover courtesan prepares to make her move in the capital. The princess’ penchant for cocaine is – like so many things with her – not the best kept secret, and the seeds that Tamerlan have planted are beginning to bear fruit.

Irbis has finally left Yorketown, hitching a ride with Eryn Harding’s ex-boyfriend. But little does she know Courtenay is already long gone. Her sister is already far north in Torrens Coast, where she’s about to present herself directly to Princess Khutulun This is the woman with the power to grant Courtenay a good placement, to ensure she has her suite in an onyx tower with all the luxuries one could wish for, and the novice concubine is, if reluctantly, becoming excited about the wealth her future might hold. Except that her visions leave a bad taste in her mouth, and a knot in the pit of her stomach; the other side is trying to tell her something, and she has a bad feeling it’s something a little different than wine and gold and the lap of luxury....
