Julian Hawthorne was born on June 22, 1846 the son of the esteemed novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. He wrote numerous poems, short stories and novels amongst which is The Golden Fleece in 1892. This helped to cement his reputation. However in 1908 he made his writing and allowed his name to be used to promote stock selling campaigns for new mining companies in Ontario, Canada. Hawthorne sold three and a half million shares in a non existent company and was tried for mail fraud. He served one year in prison. Its a tragic blight on the career of a most promising novelist.
