What if you were lost in a land of dead people? And you were there to rescue the one person you hated more than any other?
After her adventures in the Shadow Garden (The Vampire Castle), Elspeth returns to Rutherford’s school where she hopes to forget her experiences. However, a curious event takes place in the geography class reminding her there is still vital and mysterious connection between her, her grandfather, and an object she unwittingly brought back from her journey to the Far Lands of the Ethan. And, as if this is not enough, Elspeth manages by mistake to send her headmistress, the hated Mrs Featherstone, to the Kingdom of Lost Souls. Horrified and guilt-ridden, Elspeth knows she has to get her headmistress back. But how can she do this?
When her grandfather invites her to spend an afternoon at Whitterburn Hall for a game of cricket with her friends Roger and Jack, she reluctantly agrees, hoping that she might find the opportunity to ask him for an explanation of what happened in the geography class and what to do about it – and how to rescue the lost Mrs Featherstone. But in the weird surroundings of Whitterburn, an error of judgement is made and Elspeth falls through a mirrored pond – and into a bizarre new adventure – ultimately finding herself on the Ghost Road leading to the Kingdom of Lost Souls.
