Joseph Alexander Altsheler (1862 – 1919) was a famous and favorite childhood American author. Being a newspaper reporter, editor and author of popular juvenile historical fictions also was known for his short stories and non-fiction items. His six series comprise a total of thirty novels, each containing an independent story. The distinguishing feature of his stories and novels is a presence of marvelous adventure storylines and unexpected twists. In the story named The Free Rangers main characters come into conflict with a Spanish expedition in the Ohio valley and learn of the intention of its leader to make an alliance with the Indians. The five then make their way down the Mississippi to warn the governor in New Orleans of the treachery, for Spain is not an enemy of the Americans. Their travels include more ways and roads, probably a bit dangerous and surprising. This book may be more interesting to contemporary readers, for it has more continual action and fewer conversations among its actors.
