Set in Gippsland between 1850 and 1950, The Family Closet continues the story of the Allertons, Kendalls and MacDonalds; three interrelated families whose history reflects that of the region.
Separated from the rest of the colony by distance and terrain, Gippsland was the last region of Victoria to be settled by Europeans. The first pioneers came overland from New South Wales and claimed vast tracts of crown land to graze their stock. Gold was discovered in 1857 and attracted tens of thousands of ‘diggers’ willing to gamble their lives against the chance of striking it rich. Some remained and selected enough land to create small farms, while settlements such as Sale and Bairnsdale flourished as service centres to the short-lived mining towns.
While researching his family history in 1950, Robert Allerton unearths some long-held family secrets and discovers some embarrassments much closer to home.
