The Enigma

Mr. de Morlaines, a widower and former soldier, lives in retirement with his old housekeeper. He takes in a young orphaned girl, a distant relative, falls in love with her and marries her. But if this young wife is well accepted by Mr de Morlaines' son, she is much less so by the old governess who hates the "usurper". After a year of marriage, we find the body of Mr. de Morlaine who killed himself. This suicide is a real enigma for everyone, the marriage having been happy so far. The old housekeeper, to her hatred, is convinced that she knows what caused it...
