Heiress Miss Rosalind Elliott despairs of finding a husband who is not primarily concerned with her fortune. She wishes to find a man who loves her for herself and not for her handsome bank account.

When she encounters her childhood friend Philip Caldwell, she simply enjoys his company. They work together to reunite her elderly grandmother and his aged aunt, once best bows who now stare at each other across Bath’s Pump Room with open hostility.

Soon Rosalind and Philip find more happiness in their romantic companionship than their elusive mission. And that happiness soon develops into love. As a former Naval Captain, Philip has acquired ample wealth from his wartime ship’s many captured prizes, though he has told no one of his accomplishments. Rosalind is surprised to learn of his success and delighted that her money is a non-issue.

But the vigorous Bath gossip-mill catches wind of the budding romance, condemning Philip as just another fortune hunter who desires Rosalind’s property. Philip despairs of protecting Rosalind’s reputation. At the same time their happiness is threatened, they manage to bring their elderly relatives together again to renew their friendship.

Now Rosalind and Philip decide to outwit the busybodies and prevent scandal, dishonor, and humiliation. Rosalind claims such blather wouldn’t bother her, but Philip is resolute. Rosalind does not deserve to be the brunt of nasty rumors.

How will they be able to meet another challenge and be together without misgivings?
