When the Land Boom of the 1880s ended and the dust settled, Monte Vista was considered one of the platted towns that had failed. Some history books list it as a ghost town. But the farmers and entrepreneurs already there persevered, and eventually the village renamed Sunland thrived. While Sunland's struggle mirrored the basic needs of many beginning Western towns, it also had its unique stories--a farmer who doubled as a hit-man for the Mafia, a resident who committed "...the boldest train robbery that ever took place in Southern California..."
