Emani is a shy, quiet girl who’d like to keep it that way. She’s ready to start high school and as one of only two African American freshmen Em’s way to fit in means not making waves. Too bad her phone has other plans. The trouble starts with a new icon that appears on Em’s phone. When activated, strange messages dance across the screen. Each one is a cry for help asking her to step way out of her comfort zone. With the help of her best friend Dee and local bohemian Bethan, Em discovers that she has an app that allows her to get texts from guardian angels. Unsure of her newfound gift, Em tries to adjust. With each text the situation gets more serious. When one warns of her mother’s cancer diagnosis Em decides she’s had enough. She gives her phone to techie friend Kai. Though he promises to “fix” the phone Kai secretly wants the app for his dad’s software company. Em learns from Bethan that the texts from the app are not about life and death, but choice and free will. Em has second thoughts about giving her phone away. She confronts Kai. They argue and the phone ends up smashed on the floor. Em gets a new phone. When she uses it the first time she notices the Angel App icon is missing. RJ gives Em the SIM card from her old phone. She installs it and the Angel App appears. Kai, determined to get the app for his dad’s company, starts to write code for the Angel App version 2.
