The Destruction of the Sex and Gender Boxes

Based on research it has been estimated that nearly two out of every hundred people are biologically intersexual. In addition to the biological level, the bimodality also emerges on the social level, meaning that there are hundreds of millions of people in the world, whose sex and gender cannot be unambiguously defined as either male or female.

In spite of the problems of gender assignation, all of the world’s countries officially recognise  a gender boundary that leaves out the people who anatomically, on the basis of their gender expression or their gender identity are intersexual. Some countries have tried to solve this problem by the introduction of a third gender, but from the point of view of biology, all attempts at categorisation are artificial.

The essay “The Destruction of the Sex and Gender Boxes” is a written and artistic work by Susa Tyrniluoto. In her essay, Tyrniluoto deals with the problems of gendering and gender assignment through her own experiences of treatment of gender dysphoria, and she presents a alternative model where gender concepts can be reconciled with the biological concepts of sex and gender.

--

The essay is the first in a series of publications that combine arts with science, in a project financed by Kone Foundation. The project team includes Susa Tyrniluoto who treats the subject from the viewpoint of an artist whereas professor of evolutionary ecology Johanna Mappes works from the viewpoint of science.
