Jill Fountaine returns to her backwoods hometown of Dimlit in the Ozarks to plan her fourth marriage, reuniting with her third ex-husband, Barry Davison. She longs for her first church wedding, but Jill’s dream turns into a nightmare as she dodges daggers from the bossy, holier-than-thou leaders of the Women’s Altar Guild Society (WAGS). She also meets the congregation’s latest man of the cloth, Pastor David, whose angelic looks and devilish banter give a whole new meaning to the word, “Hallelujah!”

Pastor David persuades Jill to join his mission of atonement and “put the Bible down” on an unscrupulous payday loan company, scavenging on the poor folks of Dimlit. Owned by Ronnie Roland, a major donor to the church and husband of WAGS leader Georgette Roland, the company leaves a trail of swindles, scams and strange murders. As Pastor David and Jill delve deeper into the mystery, Jill becomes the prime suspect in the killings. Her eccentric Aunt Olida Wilhelmina and Uncle Verl offer support in their peculiar ways, even pushing Jill into an undercover caper that lands them all in jail. Solving the hijinks and murders is the top priority, but Jill is faced with another dilemma as she ponders whether to proceed with her nuptials to Barry now that the handsome pastor has entered her life.
