Stacey Mulligan, a successful thirty-four-year-old American living in the UK, is being looked after by gnomes whose mission it is to ensure her happiness and are only visible to her. Cosmo, the gnome leader and Mercer, live with Stacey along with their two apprentices Karl and Sonder. Although they are devoted to her happiness, they are restricted in their influence. Being unable to manipulate Stacey’s decisions, they watch the mistakes she makes with grief.
The story is told from the view point of Mercer, the Wise and puts a fantastic spin on the reality of human society. The Cemetery of Gentle Souls invites the reader to follow Stacey on her desperate quest for marriage whilst joining the plight of the gnomes that set out to protect her.
In this story, the gnomes represent the purity of love and strive to guide the human soul with the utmost dedication. Cosmo, however, develops feelings for his patron and battles his own gnome health, questioning whether the purpose of his position as protector is well founded. When Stacey follows her desperation deeper and deeper, there is only one hope left to save her soul.
