The Cascade Winners is a story of friendship of four couples linked by their jobs at an engineering firm and their love of playing bridge. Set in a small town in Northwest Washington, it depicts the last half of the twentieth century, war, racism, women’s struggles, SST-related Boeing jobs, work environment and dangers in offshore oil industry and the effects of mergers and takeovers on the employees.
The story unfolds through the viewpoints of four characters: Norma Gunnersen, a secretary, Keith Wilson, a Japanese-African American engineer, Bryan Stafford, who later becomes director of engineering, and Steve McGill, a manufacturing manager. After the parent company from Houston closes the plant in 1987, Norma’s friends move away. As agreed, Norma continues to buy joint lottery tickets for them. In 1994, they win twenty-four million dollars. They use their winnings to buy back the project books and drawings of Cascade Products, start an engineering firm, and revive the business of designing deck machinery for offshore drilling rigs..
