This is the first book in "The Vandervelde Documents" a series of interlocking stories covering the next 100 years and spanning three generations. Vandervelde himself is ageless, a charismatic "Sapient" who can cut through political hypocrisy but finds love difficult.

Beginning in 2020, "The Carbon Brief" is what gives Vandervelde and his Northern Resources Group the power to make the sort of changes the human population needs if it is to survive the ravages of climate change and resource depletion. Through the lives and loves of Van and those around him we get a vivid picture of what it might be like to live in a truly sustainable economy - a world with clean electrical power where real meat is a luxury and fresh water is desalinated. It is a world close to the limits, and the sinister Brotherhood of the Trees is watching.

The series begins with an ending - a world in 2120 of around 1.5 billion people who know that they must live, “as all life on earth must live, only on what the earth can provide”. It is a world in which Homo Sapiens has at last learnt some sapience.
