This is a collection of thirty short stories by one of the best story-tellers of the 19th century. The majority are one-chapter long, but many have two and three chapters. Almost without exception, are based in the backwoods and mountains of Kentucky, and provide a very realistic look at what life was like in rural sections of the southeast during the late 19th century. Most have a romantic theme, but the "man wins woman" doesn't necessarily work out in every case, and the twists and turns will keep you turning the pages. Opie Read is well-known for his character development, and he doesn't disappoint in this book.

This edition of the book includes 10 classic photographs documenting life in the backwoods and mountains of Eastern Kentucky that are unique to this edition of the book.

Opie Percival Read (b. December 22, 1852, Nashville Tennessee; d. November 2, 1939, Chicago Illinois) was a prolific American journalist and humorist. His bibliography lists 60 published books. Prior to 1887, Opie Read edited five separate newspapers, all in the U.S. South: the Statesville Argus (KY), the Bowling Green (KY) Pantograph, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Little Rock (AR) Evening Post, and the Little Rock Gazette, ancestor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. In 1882, Read founded his own humor magazine, the Arkansas Traveler, which he carried on after leaving newspaper journalism in 1887.
