My name is Aubrey Grey. Two weeks ago I didn't know about any of this. I was living a normal life, just like you. And then I met Miriam and everything changed.
There are people out there, people like Miriam, that call themselves the Asurim. They can use magic. And they're fighting a war - a war that's been fought for centuries. They're fighting it against the Ashmoret, a group dedicated to the eradication of magic. And the Asurim are losing.
Miriam says she has a plan. A plan to win the war. She hasn't told me what it is, but it's got the Ashmoret worried. Worried enough to want my help. And they want it bad enough that they're threatening my family. But if I help them, they're going to kill Miriam and everyone else like her.
I'm standing here staring into the bathroom mirror, trying to decide what to do. Miriam's waiting for me in the hallway. Do I turn her in and save my family? Or do I help her try to save what's left of her people? I need to decide. Because the Ashmoret aren't going to just let her go. They aren't going to just walk away. And neither is Miriam. She's going to find a way to save her people or die trying.
I need a way out. I need to be a hero. But in this story I'm not the hero. I'm the sidekick. And the way this story is going, it doesn't look like the sidekick is going to make it out alive.
