Terence Watson was a leading light in the Umbrella Club that was officially opened in 1955 by members of the famous Goon Show (Harry Secombe, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers). The term ‘Umbrella’ indicated the intention that the club should represent a diverse range of artistic activities.

Terry made significant contributions to the arts in his many roles including artist, poet and teacher. He taught at King Henry VIII School in Coventry where Philip Larkin had studied and was someone for whom Terry had much respect.

An inspiration to many students and members of the Umbrella Club, Terry gave talks at numerous arts events including appearances at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. Some of these public appearances included recitals of his own poetry and these were well received and remembered by those that attended.

Following his death in 2009, the Coventry Umbrella Club has put together this small volume of poems under the editorial direction of Bob Wright. The poems have been chosen from Terry’s portfolio under the categories of: Living, Loving, Laughing, and Terry’s War. These poems are an insight into Terry’s passion for life and his experiences. The war poems are a poignant reminder of his military service and his reflections on the many loyal men serving their country in desperate times.
