“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” -- George Santayana

On December 1, 1955, four black passengers were ordered by a Montgomery City Lines bus driver to vacate their paid-for seats in favor of late arriving white passengers who had no place to sit.
Three complied, but one refused.
The driver then called the police who physically removed her from the bus.

On April 9, 2017, four airline passengers were ordered by a United Airlines crew to vacate their paid-for seats in favor of late arriving airline employees who had no place to sit.
Three complied, but one refused.
The crew then called the police who physically removed him from the plane.

Rosa Parks refused to let the color of her skin determine that her worth was less than that of another human being.

Dr. David Dao refused to let a computer algorithm determine that his worth was less than that of another human being.

Neither was willing to stand for being dehumanized by a system that saw them as something other than a person.

Rosa Parks “took a seat” in her fight against injustice.
Her bold sacrifice initiated real change to those rules, policies, and laws that defined the worth of a human based on the color of their skin.

Dr. David Dao “took a seat” in his fight against injustice.
His bold sacrifice, and it is horrific what was done to him while being removed from that plane, is only a first step in enacting real change to the rules and policies that dehumanize us in the eyes of corporations, and their employees, and strip away our dignity when our worth is determined by a computer algorithm.
Just like the computer algorithm that determined Dr. David Dao’s worth was less than that of another human being for reasons that, frankly, do not matter.

But even more chilling were the seemingly reasonable people who immediately accepted that valuation as undeniable fact and did what they did to a fellow human being based on the directive of an unfeeling and uncaring algorithm.

Heaven forbid you are the next one “randomly” selected by a computer and deemed worth less than someone else.

This book looks at what we know about the events leading up to the video footage seen by millions of people worldwide and poses a simple question that may have a not-so-simple answer.

Who is responsible for what took place on that plane?
