Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel tells the story of a Hollywood star and a group called Traveling Symphony that tours around the Great Lakes region to perform Shakespeare plays. One cold night, Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack in the middle of his performance. It so happens that a man training to become an EMT, Jeevan, is there and leaps to his aid; but unfortunately, Arthur dies. That same night, there is a flu outbreak and the hospitals flood. Life begins to disintegrate around them. Fifteen years later, Kirsten, an actress with Traveling Symphony, moves around the settlements of a changed world, performing Shakespeare for random communities of survivors; however, when they get to a place called St. Deborah, they meet a violent prophet who threatens to kill anyone who tries to leave.
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in May 2015.
