This short article is intended for students and peatland drainage practitioners, discusses practical-quantitative aspects of subsidence in drained peatlands, in a simple approach, includes three main components: consolidation, shrinkage, and oxidation of organic matter. Emphasis is given on one-dimensional projection techniques in the context of the application of drainage in utilizing peatlands in Indonesia. This article also briefly reviews the topics of drainability limit and drainage base which are then related with the concept of subsidence rate for projecting peat depletion time. Each topic is accompanied by exercises and their solutions.
