In the first major victory of World War 2, Britain helps drive Mussolini’s fascists from Ethiopia. The aftermath of victory leaves a great deal of war material in the hands of the conquerors. A British officer, Colonel Adams, gains the privilege of repurposing these spoils of war and moving them to point in the desolate sand and rock of the Libyan Desert where the borders of Egypt, Libya and the Sudan meet. Here he intends to block potential attacks on the Assuan dam by Italian and German forces.
The colonel co-opts Russell to interpret between his officers and Italian POW’s assisting with equipment transfer. As Russell performs this key task, he regains contact with a former officer of the Sudan Defence Force, Wilfred Thesiger. Thesiger persuades Russell to add treasure hunting to his other duties. Together they search for the lost treasure of the Mamluk, Alfi Bey.
