Stiff-Person syndrome, also known as Stiff-Man syndrome or Moersch-Woltman syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. The syndrome was first described in 1956 by Frederick Moersch and Henry Woltman at the Mayo Clinic. The condition is characterized by: onset of stiffness and rigidity in skeletal muscles (muscles that are connected at either one or both ends to a bone) of the trunk and head;
slow progression of the stiffness, leading to impaired mobility; fixed deformity of the spine as the disorder progresses causing an inward curvature of the vertebral column, commonly known as hunchback; episodes of spasms that are precipitated by brisk movement, noise, or emotional stimulation; and normal intellectual abilities.
If you or a loved one is suffering from this debilitating disorder, this book gives you all of the information you need to know about the causes, tests and treatments to help get your life back.
