Peace has never been so costly. At least that's what Lieutenant John Shap learned before retreating to a remote part of Canada to escape his former life as a career soldier. Haunted by the accidental death of a civilian, Shap returns to the family home to settle down and come to grips with his own guilt. But as a military speeder lands on his doorstep several years later, he knows that there really is no escaping the past.
ARC, a vast military force, is pushing along the frontiers, seizing colonies of religious followers and establishing bases with which to strike from. Military Command wants Shap's knowledge of ARC's leader, the now disgraced but legendary war hero, Major Heinrich Rorsch. John refuses to fight, but the silent plea of a friend drives him back to the front lines to search for his son and bring him home.
Shap finds himself fighting religious fanatics on both sides of the conflict and as his search leads him deeper into the war, the only surviving members of a rookie unit soon become his best chance of success - and redemption.
